P&G is promoting a new marketing campaign called “My Black is Beautiful” which seems to want to explore black women inside and out. In conjunction with Essence magazine, P&G conducted a survey and discovered that 77% of black women are concerned about the ways they are portrayed in the media and 71% feel we are portrayed worse than other racial groups.
How this will all relate back to Pantene or Crest I’m dying to find out.
In the announcement, they said My Black is Beautiful will be ”a program designed to ignite and support a sustained national conversation by, for and about black women. The initiative was created to serve as the catalyst for a movement that affects positive change in the way African American women are reflected in popular culture.”
“My Black is Beautiful is a celebration of the personal and collective beauty of African American women and encourages them to define and promote a beauty standard that is an authentic reflection of their spirit,” said Najoh Tita Reid, P&G Multicultural Marketing Director. “We not only celebrate our own awesome beauty, but we want to empower Black women to challenge those who would see or portray us otherwise.”
There will be a multi-city My Black is Beautiful Conversation tour and a conversation guide that will help women lead discussion groups in their own communities (come on now, as if we needed that!).
I’m still trying to figure out how this relates to will all end up in Black Female Empowerment but if I can get a bag of free samples I might show up to some discussions.

I’m not a big fan of some of the new suburban areas because they lack sidewalks. I have no idea why someone would create a community that didn’t have sidewalks. What if you wanted to visit your neighbor or walk to the grocery store? But then I guess that is the point. Your neighbors might not want to see you and the corner megastore is also selling gas.
But if you are like me and you want to live in someplace where you can walk your dog on the sidewalk instead of in the street check out Walk Score. You type in your address and it ranks your community/street address by how close you can walk to all the things you might need to go to like movie theatres, restaurants, libraries, parks and grocery store. My area ranks a 62 out 100, although I thought it would rate a bit higher.
Two arrests have been made in the murders of the college students in Newark.
And I thought it was bad when the assumptions were made that it was black on black crime with the kids being killed by gang members, but now it might be even worse.
Jose Carrranza’s fingerprints were found on a beer bottle at the crime and he turned himself in. Another suspect, a 15 year old, is also in custody.
For the last year or so there has been tension among blacks and Latinos on the West Coast, spilling over into violence in school yards and on the streets. I’m hoping that things can be handled through the courts and not have retaliation sweeping through Brick City.
