Just Thinking…

without comments

Years ago when I used to live near the UC campus I would often go there to jog around the track.  In the evenings there was hardly anyone there –sometimes  it was me and this old dude who often liked to jog shirtless.  He used to smoke me; I wanted to reach out my leg and trip him.  Just to slow him down for his own sake, of course.  Old people should take it easy; they shouldn’t be zooming around a track course like their hair was on fire.

Sometimes I would come out and there would be other people on the track.  Young black chicks who were too cute to sweat; college kids who would want a quick zip, and foreign students who used the inner field to play soccer.

One day I was out on the track and a young black woman and white male came out.  The girl was thin with micro braids pulled into a ponytail and the young man had a stop watch.  The girl ran around the track, hardly looking like she broke a sweat.  I remember watching them because I’m a nosy person and a writer (which often go hand in hand).  I remember thinking they seemed close, maybe more than just coach and runner.  I remember I wondered what they were training for.  They were hardly on the field for 30 minutes; she ran a lap or two more and then they left.

For that, I remember being jealous.

I was on someone else’s blogwhen I noticed a picture of Olympian Mary Wineberg and her husband Chris Wineberg.  Actually I noted it a couple of times when, for some reason, I finally decided to click on the link.  I thought, wouldn’t it be funny if it was that couple I saw at UC’s track so many years ago?

It probably was.

Mary and Chris Wineberg

Walnut Hills/UC graduate Mary (Danner) Wineberg competed in the Beijing Olympics this summer.  Chris Wineberg, whom she married last year, has been her constant co-coach.

Perhaps it was them practicing on the ashphalt so many summers ago and it was her dust I ate.

Better hers than naked old dude.  I still want to trip him.
