Did Lack of Blasian Love Assassinate “Ninja Assassin”?

with 35 comments

Bi(Rain) and Naomie Harris

I have to admit, I completely forgot about the movie Ninja Assassin.  J and I planned on seeing it but forgot about it because the reminders have dropped off.  Maybe we have been missing the commercials or the  advertising has dropped off because everyone is going to see New Moon instead but we both completely forgot about the film.

In mid October J was excited to see the film and was telling me we should go see it but today he doesn’t even remember it. Me: Are we still going to go see Ninja Assassin? J: What is that? Maybe we aren’t even missing anything.  Most of the people who have seen it loved the action in the streets but not the lack of action in the sheets.  Folks who are down with the bumblebee swirl were hoping for some hot lip action between the characters, but then I’m not sure if that is fair to put on an action film.  I don’t watch many of them but from the few I’ve viewed romance seems to be secondary if it exists at all. What I find interesting is the perspective of two main actors.  In early interviews Rain was saying there was a romance between his character and Naomie Harris’ character but when Naomie Harris gave an interview last spring she said there was only flirtation between the two characters but hopes that in a sequel a romance will blossom between the two characters.

So you tell me, if you saw Ninja Assassin was there enough romance for an action film or did you want more romance between Raizo and Mika?

  1. no romance – just juvenile flirtation. rain’s character showed interest in an asian girl when they were both young. but, not much of anything happened between naomi and rain. i think there was a peck on the cheek.

i don’t think an absence of blasian love tanked this movie. it was an absence of a good script. and, sorry to say, rain is not that great of an actor. also, i think it’s a bit more difficult for an asian male to breakthrough as that male lead.

i wonder why they put a black girl in as a lead? i also wonder whether rain didn’t want to be romantic with a black girl because, well, he is korean after all. i imagine that may not go over so well at home, particularly since he’s so popular.

  2. Frankly, if the female lead had been white (especially blonde!), there would have been romance. Let’s not kid ourselves. Hollywood continues in its quest to convince the world that only white women are bankable as romantic figures in any kind of movie. When I saw the movie, I looked at my watch and thought, why is this movie so short? Duh, as I hit myself in the forehead, I realized that the obvious romantic chemistry between Rain and Naomi had not been expanded. Other than a few lines like, “I’m liking you more and more, Mika” and her kissing him on the cheek while he was knocked out cold from being almost beaten to death, nothing more was done. I couldn’t help thinking that I, with no cinematic experience, can pick out at least 5 instances where there would have been some kind of makeout session or sexual encounter. Why, oh why can we not get past color in this country? Regardless of whether the movie would have gone over big in Korea, if the backers of a film want a blockbuster, they have to appeal to an American audience. However, as we know that can’t happen unless the female character is white or for that matter asian. Come to think of it, there was a romantic spark between Naomi and her boss, a British actor. Again, nothing done about it other than a one-liner about how beautiful Mika is. How often have we heard black women other than Halle Berry lookalikes referred to as beautiful? I dare you to name any movie made that isn’t already dealing with interracial romance between a black actress and any other race actor! Look at Avatar, for example, The only reason that the love affair between an obviously black Zoe Saldana and hunky Aussie Sam Worthington existed is because they are hidden behind made up characters from another world completely. Had they not been made up, the female character would have been white (again Blonde). What is wrong with people, especially Hollywood moguls? Are they so far out of tune with the common man that they can’t see that putting black actresses opposite asian or white actors in any kind of movie, rather than only those driven by racial questions, is the motherlode? This is an untapped market. Exploit it as you exploit every things else. Thanks for the opportunity to comment. I’d love to get response to my point of view.

  3. I haven’t seen Avatar yet but plan to see it in the next few weeks. I didn’t know that Saldana was one of the Avatars in the movie. Although I think Hollywood has a long way to go when it comes to black female desirability and leading role potential, you have to admit that although a blue Zoe is the romantic object, she was completely lusted after in Star Trek by Kirk and Spock. That is a long way from the 60s episode where they touted it as the first interracial kiss on television but Kirk basically had to be forced to kiss her although he made out with every blue, green and polka dot woman across the galaxy.

So do you think if they did a sequel then there could be a romance between Naomi and Rain? Or did it perform too badly at the box office to expect a Ninja Assassin II?

  4. Rentec, I dont think it’s too much to put on an action film. Mirroring what “noromace” said- Action movies that I’ve seen over the years (circa 1980’s – present) there is almost always an obligatory hetrosexual sex scene, and yes they are always white!

I am not sure that if the female lead was white that there still would have been any action. All of these “Ninja” movies are the same in that the Asian make is a robot showing little emotion. Byung Hun Lee was presented as such in G.I. Joe. I am suggesting that the lack of a love scene is the result of Hollywood’s construction of Asian men in general. When was the last time we saw an Asian male in a movie – a) When he was not a martial arts master? 2. a Chinese/Korean/Japanese gang member? 3. a fem gay man. I cant even answer my own questions.

  5. @ The One

Bingo. And there’s this whole bullshit spiel of “if we show him without his shirt a lot and we show him kicking everyone’s ass, that should make him sexual enough”.

    Gee…talk about a deliberate miscalculation.

I think we need to stop tolerating this brazen bullshit. We should’ve put our foot down at Romeo Must Die and flooded Hollywood with death threats.

Let Ninja Assassin be our final reminder.

  6. The movie was absolutely terrible first off, lol. The chemistry between Rain and Naomie was awkward and weak. I was hoping for some romance between the two, but it was non-existent. That would have made the movie at least enjoyable. The movie made over 60 million worldwide and the budget was 40 million so I hope there is a sequel with the relationship between Rain and Naomie expanded.

  7. yeah, i TOTALLY had beef with that. like, DUH! “rain, you had a chance to bring the sexy twice!” maybe they were worried about korean netizens, maybe the writers tho

my friend and i had a bit of a laugh to ourselves after we saw how fine he was in ninja assassin since we had met him in seoul a few weeks prior.

after the film she was like, “he’s lucky i didn’t see this before we met him in the club cuz i might of ripped his clothes off.” i’m like WORD. i know i would’ve at least asked him if he wanted the “black girl kiss” he should’ve gotten in the movie, OK!

Lmao @ ripping his clothes off. He was beautiful in the movie.
I wouldn’t say the lack of Blasian love killed the movie but it could’ve spiced things up a bit. As a Black female, if I go into a movie where I KNOW a guy’s shirt will be off, I want to see some sexy scenes. They had enough to work off of to get something going on. They must have really thought I would’ve been satisfied w/ the shirtless thing (which I was but sexy time would have been better lmao)

  9. The lack of love scenes was not because she was black. The lack of love scenes is because he was still in love with Kiriko and didn’t love Mika. If you would just watch the movie and THINK a little bit that would have been apparent. There was no place for a romance in the movie between Raizo and Mika.

  10. no! i firmly believe that the only reasin thre wasnt no blasian luv was bcause of da fact dat she waas BLACK. no offense but if there wuz a white girl in da movie, it wouldve been on btwn raizo and the nameless white girl.

  11. I’m with tyluv3. Kiriko’s dead and not coming back, y’all. Besides…men don’t operate like that. She died when they were teens. Raizo’s all growed up now.

  12. I bought the dvd and I loved the action. The story line was kind of weak because it was mostly clique. I agree with tyluv2, if she was white, he probably would have jumped over the moon and everything. I even heard in an interview that Rain likes girls like Megan Fox. I hope the sequel is better if there is one.

  13. I agree w/ @Ankhesen.

Though it could be quite possible that he still loved Kiriko, I mean come on, there could have been at least one scene in the doggone film where Rain kissed Mika before leaving to get in the car or before he did something!! Not to be racial, but I agree w/ everyone who said this prior, had Mika been of a different race, there would have been a peck on the cheek, Rain would have flirted a ton more and just because, there might have even been possibly a marriage scene. (Ok ok, the marriage thing was a stretch, but you get what I mean!)

The movie was good, but not gunna lie, I was readily waiting for that one kiss somewhere in the film. :l Hopefully there will be a 2 & Mika & Rain will have some kind of romantic scene…

  14. Always looking for a reason to pull the race card. If you watch the movie (and go through life) not always watching a person’s race you would not have noticed that. You would have realized the story instead of making up some race crap.

It was obvious he still loved the other girl even though she had been dead for a long time. Didn’t anyone notice all the flashbacks and stuff he was constantly having of her?

  15. It was because she was black. Hollywood is trying to condition people into think that a black woman is not sexy when to be real, black woman have always been an object of desire. It’s just that men of other races took when they shouldn’t have or where in the closet about it. Koreans are no different. When I moved to Korea I was told that Korean men are pretty much mom’s boys and if their mother doesn’t approve they will end relationship or top of that Korea men may not know how to approach a black woman but that doesn’t stop then from looking. Even with the bad plot, story line, dialogue,ect.. there was a small amount of sexual tension to work with. What I didn’t understand with Mika is black woman, most of us, are natural caregivers. I would have been happy with the movie if they had a scene were Mika was cleaning Rain wombs and they made eye contact while she was doing so or a scene where Rain got a glimspe of her naked when she took a shower and he looked longer then he should have.

  16. Rain did well in the movie and he was at his best as usualIt isnt fair to call him racial rain is sweet and kind he is not a racist.
The reason there was no big love scence is rain is shy and sweet and felt uncomfortable about acting love scences he is supossedly very shy at times.
Rain did great god bless him

  17. i though the story line was fine… it was simple and to the point. anywho… to say i wanted a sex scene is stupid, but a kiss would have been nice. but i heard that there was a romantic scene but they took it out. and also i heard that people in korea were concerned about it happening… and in an interview rain stated that he wanted to do a romance movie with a white american. go figure… maybe in a future film we will get some blasian love… lol.. i love movies that pit the unexpected together..

  21. NUMBER 1: if koreans were different and had this “animosity” toward white ppl, white people wouldn’t be saying “oh lets just move on from race”. they would be a bit nudged by the fact that an entire race shows favoritism to every other race except them. NUMBER 2: this topic has nothing to do with racism its more about how the movie could have been better and that it probably would’ve satisfied kajillions lots more of ppl if the black and asian characters indulged in a rare relationship. i myself would’ve enjoyed it but, hey, like everyone else im completely agreeing with the statement “THAT’S HOLLYWOOD”.

  23. I only watched very little from Ninja Assassin. Thankfully, I did. My brother said it sucked.

About Naomi and Rain?it would have be great if they would have had a love scene, but we would be snubbed of it. Rain does picture me as the modest type, but I also think that it wasn’t going to happen because 1) A couple of people brought it up on here: Hollywood’s fixation of White women playing those roles. Just recently, The Green Hornet came out. In the movie, Cameron Diaz was supposed to kiss Jay Zhou, but it didn’t happen because she felt that it would “complicate” matters 2) Hollywood still want us to believe that Asian man can never be sexy. Jet Li said that as much as he would like to be in more romantic/charismatic scenes, nobody has offered him a role for it 3)In conjunction with Jet words, he also said that the Chinese audiences were “not loving” like American audiences( Source: Blackfilm.com)

It’s unfortunate. Hollywood are quickly running out of ideas, yet they are not willing to diversify Asian actors roles. Even though I think that Bi is hot stuff, they still is typecasting him. They know that he doesn’t always portray the guy next door, but to make sure that he will not star in any sexy scenes, they put him in video/comic book movies. Don’t get me wrong, I do like to like to look at some of these movies, but it just seems that is all Hollywood want to put them at.

  24. a little education for the not so smart, ninja’s are not supposed to show emotions. But even without this knowlege you should realize that raizo was trained to be as emotionless as possible, though he did show emotions at the appropriate times. And on the issue of the lack of romance, though i wouldn’t hav minded a little, it’s cliche`d. maybe they were trying something different. one should always try to view things from all angles. I agree with tru this has nothing to do with race, it’s just the story line.

  25. i liked the movie, the plot was simple, he kicked ass, and hell, he is plain hot… i do wish there was a little romance between the characters, but it is what it is… btw i heard he made a statement that he would like to do a romance film with an american, i can guarantee he was not talking about a black american… i love rain, but i don’t think that he would chance his career to be the first top korean performer to go against the odds and do a full out black and asian romance… no matter how go the script is…

  26. I’ll definitely say that the storyline for Raizen’s character was pretty much centered around the love life of the girl in his past. So, if you think about it, it makes sense for there not to have been a stretch of a relationship between him and Mika.

HOWEVER, I won’t ignore the fact that it was very possible to instill more “sensual” moments between the two. Naomi Harris played the main female role next to Rain’s main male role. Normally, even if not a lot, the two main characters would have more than a peck on the kiss or small flirtations. Had Mika been white or asain, there would’ve definitely been more chemistry in the end. That’s just the truth…for now. Hollywood has always been this way but it should change.

Plus, Namoi Harris is a damn good actor. Have you seen her in Pirates of The Carribbean? She’s beautiful and could take on any non-black actress. When you think about it white people are in almost every country in the world as a race, so people are used to seeing them in the “lead.”

  28. It is almost a given or a must to have a love scene in an action film especially when you have a male hero who saves the damsel. Well, Mika was by far from a damsel in distress — she saved Raizo on many occassions.
What is frustrating is the fact that not only did the director miss a GREAT opportunity to showcase Raizo & Mika’s romance or make their awesome chemistry manifest, but the “shower” scene Naomie talks about in interviews didn’t even make the deleted scenes of the DVD…..REALLY???!?!?

    Blaque Tigress

    13 July, 2011 at 10:34 am

  29. The whole Raizo and Mika thing was COMPLETELY a race issue. People can say” oh, they were just trying to not be cliche and make a different type of movie blazeblahblah”, but the truth is that why would Hollywood choose the ONLY black woman/asian man relationship since Rome Must Die and butcher the love between the characters as they did in that movie? It doesn’t make sense because the ethnicity of the characters was already an original story plot on its own- meaning that Raizo and Mika having an INTIMATE relationship would have been more original than what they ended up doing. Honestly, Hollywood just cut out the few scenes (which was already shot and ready for the movie just like any other part- meaning it was originally MEANT to be much more romantic story) so that they could continue to make the movie without making any waves…..which probably would have been the difference between the GREAT movie all of us wanted and the not so great movie we ended up getting.

  30. @traild I know Im a little late on this discussion but did he actually state the name of the actress that he wanted to work with or did he actually say that he wanted to work with a white American. I dont know him personally but if he was that blunt about. I luv rain bit if he was dissapointed about working eith Naomi because she is not White American then it does not seem like he is fond of black women very much, I dont know why I’m suprised because we are not considered desirable in Asia unless you have fair skin. Was it alleged that he said that or he actually said it? what interview was it?

  31. I’m a fan of BI/RAIN and also an African American female of nearly 40 yrs. ,,,, can tell you that (whilst watching uploaded interviews and tele shows) the Korean media would absolutely KILL this man if he deviated from their ‘norm,’ publicly. Each/Every time he’s been asked by the K-media who he likes (his ideal), THEY always give him KOREAN actresses to choose from! He NEVER has the chance to state his own opinion, other than the fact that he wants a ‘chubby’ woman who can THROW DOWN in the kitchen, yet who’s a ‘freak’ behind closed doors! Now, yes, he told some American journalist that Megan Fox fit his ‘ideal’ type, in 2009. But the most recent stuff he’s said does NOT state a particular race, but the ‘cooking freak,’ he’s stickin’ with!!! It’s a wee bit ‘normal,’ to be honest; for him to remain very Korean-Loyalist in interviews, because until he totally dominates the Western market(s) as he has Asia, his meal ticket is flourished by THEM! But, I must state he has more natural SWAGG than ALL of these young, black, OVER-SEXED, male singers in America/Britain. Plus, although RAIN states (constantly) he desires marriage and kids above anything else, he (secretly) has/had the means and opp. to taste ALL [of] the flavours of the world, and NOT many Asian women (in Korea, esp.) are ‘chubby!’ My friend and I heard that in an interview and laughed whilst saying, ‘Usher took this cat to MAGIC CITY, and BI/RAIN had a blast, eh?’ LOL.
Yet I know loads of people who LOVE/ENVY African American music and the percieved ‘Coolness’ that it portrays, but would NEVER date a sista, because that aspect ISN’T ‘cool.’ I hope I’m wrong about our RAIN, but I don’t think so. He could do it (marry/date an African Am. woman/Latina) if he was MADLY in love and was willing to stand up for her and tell the Korean media to bloody PISS OFF, but they sustain his lifestyle, and he’s not as widely embraced here (US), because he’s an Asian male, and I do agree w/the folks who have stated Asian females are considered ‘sexy,’ whilst the men are NOT! Again, watch (via youtube) interviews of him and other K-actors. They ALL want to be (and compare their careers) BRAD PIT! They NEVER say DENZEL or WILL SMITH, even though these Korean actors/singers LOVE them some hip-hop and rump shakin’! RAIN was forced into the K-Army for two yrs., so let’s give him another chance and see what FIRE he brings to the world stage in 2013!!! He’ll be 32/33 Korean age,,, btw, he spent a lot of time in Cali. w/Tyrese, Omarion, and the young ladies that were formally known as ‘The Cheetah Girls,’ so perhaps he ‘secretly’ dated one of them??? Hmmm mm, one never knows, huh?
*NOTE* In Korea, they’re also VERY racist against each other, gays, and S.E. Asians, so,,,? ;(

    Cheers!

  32. What’s funny is i was at a “party” one night and saw this movie playing on the tv and got so caught up in the action and story eventhough it was playing on mute. I’m a black man and i love Naomie Harris and think she was beautiful and even i was waiting to see if the two characters would get together. I’m not surprised they didn’t. I certainly believe that had the two characters been non black a/o asian actors they would have gotten together sexually,

  33. It really was first and foremost an action movie. There was supposed to be more obvious romance; there was a scene in the original script (available online!) that had Mika and Raizo take a shower together. It wasn’t exactly lip locking, but Mika became more aware of Raizo in a romantic sense. For some reason, that scene wasn’t in the movie or the deleted scenes >.< I know a lot of viewers, including myself, wished that scene or a more romantic perspective was included in the movie. But the change in the transition from script to film is most likely why Rain and Naomie had different answers about romance in Ninja Assassin. Personally, I thought the movie was still good and it had sweet moments. But they left you wanting much more than what was given in the movie.

  34. Let’s call a spade a spade please. Hollywood is racist to the bone. They could not allow a fine Asian man and a beautiful Black woman to hook up. If you think about it the movie was good enough yet down right cruel, because anybody in their right mind could see their should be a romance between the leading actors, yet they choose to disappoint us to the bone. I will not hold my breath for a Ninja Assassin 2 bringing back the original leads because they know we would be going to see them with the expectation of seeing them together romantically.

  35. Hi, i’m not blasian but i agree with J-Bird. I feel sorry for Ms. Harris, she’s a sexy woman. But when it comes to asian actor, esp. South Korean, i doubt that they made romantic scene with black women. Korean medias always give him Korean actress to choose as ideal type. And you’re not considered attractive if you’re not white enough by Korean standard. So i’m afraid that Korean media would turn back on him if he continued to make romantic scene with black woman. Look like they would curse Rain and say bad things about Ms. Harris. S. Korea is famous about its obsessive fans.

I never knew Rain personally, so i couldn’t consider him racist or not. But South Korean is one of the most racist place in the whole world. Where foreigner with darker skin would be threatened like disease. Sounds stereotyping, but it’s true.
And Rain (no matter how much i’m enchanted with his masculine exotic appearance) is Korean, isn’t he?
