More Racial Attitudes in the News

You can tell that the newness of Sarah Palin is wearing off on the media and pollsters because now the focus is back on race and racial views.

Yahoo News Pollin conjuction with Stanford University conducted a poll whose results show that 1/3 of white Americans have negative attitudes towards African Americans.

But before Republicans and self-identified Independents begin to pat themselves on the back it was concluded that they also harbor racial prejudices against African Americans also.

White Democrats were more likely to find African Americans to be friendly (39%), hardworking (35%), and good neighbors (36%).  But a small percentage of white Democrats also found blacks to be violent (15%), lazy (10%),  and irresponsible (10%).

White Republicans and Independents were less likely to say that African Americans were law abiding and hardworking and more often agreed that blacks complained a lot and weren’t smart at every day things.

Although race influences some voters on whether they will vote for Barack Obama it isn’t the only factor.  The poll also indicates that many still question his experience and whether he will actually be able to bring about the change they want.  Those are the worries that some Democrats have expressed will keep them from voting for Barack in November.

The AP-Yahoo poll said they used an online survey after randomly screening and interviewing people by phone.  They said people are more open in their answers with online interviews than talking to strangers.

The poll sought to measure latent prejudices among whites by asking about factors contributing to the state of black America. One finding: More than a quarter of white Democrats agree that “if blacks would only try harder, they could be just as well off as whites.”

Those who agreed with that statement were much less likely to back Obama than those who didn’t.

The poll also used black and white faces “to measure implicit racial attitudes, or prejudices that are so deeply rooted that people may not realize they have them”.  The researchers say that a higher percentage of whites have more negative feelings towards blacks than they realize themselves.
