Laura, Euna and Roxana in Our Prayers
This is not a good spring for American Journalists.
In January NPR/Fox news reporter Roxana Saberi was picked up in Iran, first accused of working without a journalist card and then accused of spying in Iran for the U.S. government. Today she was found guilty of spying and sentenced to 8 years in prison.
She holds dual citizenship in Iran and the U.S (her father is Iranian and her mother is Japanese) but the Iranian government doesn’t recognize dual nationality and tried her as one of their own.
“She entered the country as an Iranian citizen and holds Iranian residency, passport and national identity card. Even if she has another citizenship, it will not affect the way we will proceed with her case,” Hassan Haddad said two weeks ago to CNN.
In another country, two more American journalists are being held. Reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee are being held in North Korea, charged with allegedly entering the country illegally and espionage.
“(H)oping to interview defectors from North Korea, began with a series of meetings in Seoul before flying to the Chinese city of Yanji, on the North Korean border. They were warned not to leave Chinese soil but ventured across the frozen Tumen river anyway. Exact details of their capture vary, with some accounts indicating that they were arrested by North Korean troops after refusing to stop filming, and others suggesting that they were pursued across the ice and back on to Chinese soil before being taken into custody.
Either way, within 24 hours Ms Ling and Ms Lee were taken in separate vehicles to Pyongyang for questioning. A week later it was announced that they would be put on trial. ”
