Final Farewell

This year saw the passing of two scholars.

Dr. Ivan van Sertima

The first was historian/anthropologist Dr. Ivan van Sertima (26 January 1935 – 25 May 2009).  His book, “They Came Before Columbus” was noted for his controversial assertion that Africans came to the new world long before Europeans.

The second is Ronald Takaki (12 April 1939 – 25 May 2009).  Takaki has done a lot to expand the curriculum of Asian American studies in colleges.

Since the 70s, Takaki has written over 15 books on multiculturalism, Asian American history and interracial studies.  Many people consider him the Father of multicultural studies.

Ronald Takaki

If you don’t know the work of these two men take some time to get to know them.  Read van Sertima’s “African Presence in Early Asiaor Takaki’s “From Different Shores: Perspectives on Race and Ethnicity in America“.  These two great men have left us a legacy that should not be forgotten and hopefully the rest of us can carry it on in their memory.
