Planning for a New Music Takeover
Yesterday my coworker Megan and I appeared on a local radio show called Mr. Ben’s KPop Power Hour. We went to discuss our Music Monday program at the Main Library and our love of KPop music.
Yep, even we here in the boring midwest love us some KPop music.
While the music was playing on the air we got into a discussion about why a lot of Asian acts have a hard time breaking through the American markets and until Jay Sean and Far East movement hit the airwaves a few years ago no Asian act had been on the charts since Don Ho hit with Tiny Bubbles.
So, I’m not sure what it will take for Korean artists to get notice here in the states. Lots of American artists have done collaborations (Akon +Girls Generation, Lil Kim+Se7en, Flo Rida +G Dragon) but of course these songs get played overseas but not here.
But when I got home I had a tweet from Mr. Ben that said: Why did i just see 2NE1 on an American commercial for Addidas?
I checked the link and indeed they were!
And I think, how awesome is that!
This is probably how the music revolution will start, with people like Mr. Ben spinning different music wherever they can, blogs like BoldasLove showcasing different acts and festivals like AfroPunk bring new music to the people. Sponsors like Addidas will see whats going on and throw money at the new cool to revitalize their brand.
And if megaradio conglomerates are still around then they will catch on although I kind of hope they don’t because then I am sure I will be inundated with Like This on passing car radios 24/7 😦
